I realized my passion for teaching at a young age. Growing up, many of my role models were my elementary school teachers. I desire to be a role model and support my students, as my teachers did for me. Working with young children has always been a goal of mine, which is why I am a Childhood Education major. Teaching allows me to touch the lives of many children, which is extremely rewarding.
I believe every student has the potential to learn, but students need good, effective teachers. In order to be a good, effective teacher I will create a comfortable, safe, and positive environment for my students; this environment will make students feel comfortable and encourage him or her to engage and actively participate in his or her own learning. As a successful teacher, I will always guide and support my students. I have learned many theories and concepts about the development of children which I use to help give my students the support and motivation they need to develop and learn in school.
As a teacher, it is important to understand and appreciate the diversities among your students. Whether the diversities are academic, cultural, or socioeconomic, I will accept and appreciate all of my student’s diversities. Along with appreciating my students’ diversities’, I use different instructional opportunities to adapt to my diverse students. It is also important to encourage my students to value other students’ diversities and understand that everyone has his or her own strengths and weaknesses but that we should accept everyone as they are.
As a childhood education major with a special education certification, I believe that every student has the ability to learn, even if the student has special needs. I believe every student should have a chance to learn and grow. I feel it is so important to understand that no one student is the same, especially when thinking about students with special needs. I believe it is imperative for parents to be involved in his or her child’s education, but I believe it is even more important for parents who have children with special needs, to be involved in his or her child’s education. As a teacher, I will work with the parents and communities, in helping to make sure the child is getting the appropriate education he or she needs.
As a teacher, it is important to be culturally responsive. Being a culturally responsive teacher, I use the diversity among my students and incorporate their different beliefs into my lessons. By doing so, I am acknowledging their various cultures and showing the importance of being proud and staying connected to their culture. It’s crucial to not only encourage students to be proud of where they are from and what they believe in, but to encourage all students to respect other people’s cultures. Bringing in students’ values into lessons also helps students connect their home life and their school life.
Like John Dewey, I believe education should be student-centered. I believe education should be social because I feel students learn best by doing and applying experiences. Like John Dewey, I also believe the teacher’s role is to guide his or her students and incorporate real life situations so students can find meaning in what they are learning. I also agree with the philosophy of John Dewey and his goals for students, such as being able to critically think and problem solve. I want my students to become intelligent problem solvers, and be prepared to live in the real world. Through the incorporation of realistic situations, my students will be able to apply their knowledge from the classroom in their everyday lives and they will be prepared for the situations they may face. In regards to making leaning social for the students, I believe in group work and collaborative learning. To me, it is important that students have opportunities to work with their peers to help develop social skills, communications skills, stimulate critical thinking, and develop higher level thinking skills. As a childhood teacher, I must show my students how to have positive social interactions so that a supportive and positive learning environment is created for all of my students; collaboration is a proven way for students to learn how to behave and positively interact with others.
Being a childhood educator, I am excited to teach my students a variety of subjects. I really look forward to meeting the Common Core standards for ELA being that my area of specialty is English. My background in English will also help me to be interdisciplinary and relate subjects to each other, and also incorporate literacy across the curriculum.
As a teacher, I look forward to being a lifelong learner, and a reflective practitioner. I am excited to teach, guide, and support my students as we both continue on our educational journey.
